DirecTV can die

I have used DirecTV for quite some time. If you want subscription TV service, theirs cannot be beat. I literally have a house that isn’t wired from the box to the house, for cable TV. Inside the house I’ve got probably 5,000′ of CAT5 and RG6 coax for all my video, network, and telcom needs. Comcast will never see a dime from me. So why can DirecTV die? They have some of the worst customer service on the planet. Sure they tempt you with their sexy HD, more HD than anyone else, they seduced me with the DirecTivo then kept me with their not terrible DRV. And not only does their customer service suck, they bleed me for over $75 a month and I’m not getting anything special. No movie channels, just the middle of the road package.
Well, it turns out I’m under contract for another year. I want to cancel because I want to reduce expenses and I honestly don’t find much value in TV anymore. I used to watch TV regularly but now I find it annoying. Other than reality TV and tabloid journalism what’s on TV? It’s all useless nonsense and I find if I watch TV now I feel unproductive and like I’m wasting my time. I’m starting a business and getting a master’s degree in Computer Science. I’m involved in two other business ventures and I work full time. I have better, more meaningful things to do than watch Steve Wozniak get voted off Dancing with the Stars.
So I can cancel TV, save money, have more time, and send a message that I don’t care for their crappy customer service? Count me in. I’m making it a goal to stop doing business with companies that charge outrageous rates (DTV) or have poor customer service (DTV). However, there is one I won’t cancel, my DSL line from Qwest. They are among the worst at customer service but they have a good price and good service. And let’s face it, I need at least one thing to waste time and provide mindless entertainment.
