So I wake this morning to a surprise dumping of snow in the Denver metro area which is always fun when you have puppies you’re trying to house train. At 2:30 this morning it was slightly cloudy and at 7 am there was 6-8 inches of snow. Anyway, as I always tend to do, I browse a few key sites each morning. In my rounds I came across a story on digg.com about a girl in California who sent a text message every two minutes of day while she was a awake.
It helps me see the need for two-way texting on Crowd Rent. One of our goals is to implement one-way texting to notify the owners and customers about movement on the rental transaction. For example, the owner would get a text when a request is made or the renter when the request is approved. When you’re dealing with local rentals and asynchronous requests we need to be able to notify the parties via the most ubiquitous communication medium of our generation: The Cell Phone. The younger generation finds email antiquated and voice mails are useless. At 30 years old I get where they’re coming from to a certain extent. I hate a voicemail or a phone call to say I’m five minutes late. Text me! Now I personally love my email but that’s my age showing.
Imagine being able to conduct an entire rental transaction without ever sitting down to a computer. Imagine acknowledging a request, working out the details over the phone, and releasing the payment over a text. That’s facilitating local rentals for the current generation. Now our customer base isn’t all 20 somethings on Facebook and Twitter. A large percentage of our target base is older people in the suburbs so we’ll still offer the “old school” method of emails and computers and websites. But we hope to offer our younger, more mobile customers their preferred method here soon.
Now, get off my lawn!
